Picture frames are fun accessories to an arts and crafts project, whether you are making a gift for someone, or just doing artwork to relieve tension or to hang up around your house. There are many different ways you can use picture frames to create designs and one of a kind pieces of artwork as long as you have a few other items handy. The picture frame project, if classified, would be considered mixed media. Following are some ideas to start with when considering using picture frames for art. Start with these and the creativity will surely start flowing and most likely by the end of the first project you’ll have your own set of picture frame art ideas.

First, obviously, you need a picture frame. Any one will do. Use an extra one you have lying around the house, or one of those awkward shaped ones that someone bought you but you will never have a photo that will fit properly inside it. Or, if you must purchase one at the store, go for the cheapos. In this project, more often than not the frame itself will be the foundation for the art work to go on top of, so the original look might not even be visible. (You can choose which project you want to try depending on how important to you it is that the actual frame is a major part of the visual result.)

Once you have your frame, look around the house or a craft store for some items that strike you. Anything goes with this because picture frame art can extend beyond one’s wildest imagination and pretty much any object can be made to go along with the piece, as long as it is small enough to fit the chosen frame. Finally, here are some ideas of what you can do with your picture frame art piece.

Take a box of magnetic poetry that has gotten old on the refrigerator and find a nice saying that is appropriate for your piece and also that fits inside the border of the picture frame.There may be glass designed to protect the photo, or plastic. Either one, try to take out the cardboard piece in the back. You are going to create a message with the magnetic poetry (cut-up as needed) and glue it onto the cardboard backing so that it will show through the clear window. Your black and white letters will likely look great on a normal white background, but if you think it needs a little something more, glue onto the cardboard your own flat background. You can get this from magazines, photographs, newspaper clippings, or something like wrapping paper or stationary. So simply set up your phrase, glue it on the chosen background, and slip the whole thing back into place and see it shine through the clear window frame as a cool, trendy, art-deco piece.

***Find some nice, fairly thick stock paper (business card thick) and cut into thin strips of about a centimeter in width, give or take some. This works particularly well if the frame is pretty. Try to select colors that match the frame, as it will be showing through. Once you have your strips, roll them up length-wise into a small enough circle to be able to glue flat onto the frame. You can make flower like designs with or just leave the loops as they are and once you get the hang of it and can use the glue without making a mess (it’s tough) you can vary the tightness of your rolled paper to create different looks.

This one takes some time but looks really neat in the end. Pick a common, symmetrical shape, preferably a square or a triangle and experiment with sizes. What you are going to be doing is cutting out this shape, either from stock paper or from magazine pages (depending on the color and look you want) and repeating it next to itself until it covers the entire border of the picture frame. The smaller, the most intense looking, but it will take a while if you make them too tiny. In the case of the triangle, alternate shapes by placing every other triangle right side up and the ones between, upside down. Simply repeat this pattern the whole way down the border (or you could do it in the window and leave the border of the picture frame alone), gluing the paper on neatly and in the end you’ll have a mosaic like piece of art work.

These are only a few of the numerous ways you can make picture frames into works of art. Brainstorm and experiment with different textures and items. Try adding paint to the project or perhaps glitter. Use buttons. Velcro. Colored wire. Bottle caps. The possibilities are endless!

Photo Frame Crafts for Children

Photo frames are a very simple craft that can be made by children of all ages. Kids will love creating their own one-of-a-kind frames to display their pictures in. These frames can be used to decorate their bedrooms or can even be given as gifts. Here are several easy to make frame ideas for you and your children to try:

Twig Frame
A twig frame is extremely easy to make and is appropriate for children of any age. To create a twig frame you will need:
Twigs
Twine
Photo
Hot Glue
1. Help your child gather 12 twigs that are equal in length.
2. Separate the twigs into four groups of three twigs. This is a great activity for very young children to practice their counting skills.
3. Arrange the twigs so that two of the groups are lain out vertically with the other two groups lain out horizontally on top of them. The twigs should be far enough apart to place a photo in the center and approximately one inch of twig should stick out away from the frame in each direction.
4. Use twine to tie the corners of the twigs together.
5. Flip the photo frame over. Use a hot glue gun to glue the photo into place.

Foam FrameMagnet
Foam frames are very fun to make but will require help from an adult for younger children. These adorable frames can be hung on your filing cabinets or refrigerator. To make a photo frame you will need:
Piece of craft foam in any color
Magnet
Scissors
Magnet
Glue
Buttons or sequins
1. Help your child cut a fun shape out of the foam. It does not matter what shape it is, but some ideas to consider are circles, squares and stars.
2. Cut a hole in the center of the foam piece that is the same shape as the outside of the foam. The inside hole should be large enough to display a photo in.
3. Flip the foam over. Glue the photo onto the back of the frame so that it shows through the front.
4. Have your child glue the buttons or sequins onto the frame in any pattern they choose.
5. Glue the magnet onto the back of the frame.

Heart Puzzle Photo Frame
This is a very easy craft to make and is a great way to recycle an old jigsaw puzzle that is missing pieces. To create a heart puzzle photo frame you will need:
Puzzle Pieces
Craft Paint
Glue
Photo
Paintbrushes
Newspaper
1. Lay out the newspaper on the work surface you will be using. Set out the jigsaw puzzle pieces, craft paint and paintbrushes.
2. Have your child paint each puzzle piece in the colors of their choice. If the frame is for Valentines Day, red and pink are appropriate choices.
3. Allow the puzzle pieces to dry thoroughly before moving on.
4. Help your child arrange the pieces of the puzzle so that they overlap one another and form the shape of a heart.
5. Use glue to connect each piece.
6. Flip the frame over and glue down the photograph so that is show through the front.

How to Customize a compact mirror

Customization is hot right now when it comes to gifts or personal accessories and custom compact mirrors are no exception. Although you can buy fancy compact mirrors, making one that speaks to you is worth the small amount of time and effort needed. If you are ready to add a sprinkle of glitter to your handbag or make the girls green with envy on your gals night out, you can customize a compact mirror.

Glue on the bling. Apply small rhinestones or sequins to your compact back to add shine and style. Use a tweezers to pick up small stones or colorful sequins and simply dot a bit of glue and place. Create a design by gluing stones in wavy patterns, letter shapes or swirls and then filling in the blank areas with a different color stones. Draw it out ahead of time, or simply glue and go.

Spray paint the back. Use a faux finish spray paint or metallic spray paint to give your compact a new look. Try a crackle paint or make your mirror look like stainless steel or new bronze. Place the mirror on some newspaper back side up and apply spray paint in light coats till covered. Allow to dry and you are set to go.

Add some foam charm. Foam shapes and letters are an easy way to customize your compact. Spell out your name or glue cute bumble bees, figures or animal shapes onto your compact back with superglue. Foam shapes are especially nice for a young pre-teen as they are colorful and available shapes are usually simple.

Hot glue some fun flowers. Cut the blooms off of silk flowers and hot glue to the back of your compact. Wide flower blooms like silk mums or daisies work well and add a fanciful look to your purse. Crowd the flower buds onto the back for a rich custom look. Place a dot of hot glue on the middle of the blossom’s back and apply. Let dry slightly before you crowd it in with the next bud application

Bead it. Use small micro-beads to decorate your compact mirror. Beads come on strings and can be glued down in straight or curvy lines. Simply apply some bead glue in a design on the back of your mirror and lay the strung beads upon the glue. Allow to dry a bit then pull the string out for a high-dollar look. Play with design and multiple colors to really kick your customization up a notch.

Decoupage it. Use old vintage photographs, postcards or even handmade or origami paper to apply a design to your mirror back. Follow decoupage directions by applying the glue, then the artwork and a final seal of decoupage material such as Modge Podge.

Add some animal print. Whether you hot glue fabric animal prints to the back of your compact or decoupage paper animal prints, a classic leopard print or zebra pattern never goes out of style. Trace a circle onto paper or fabric to match your compact size and cut out carefully. Glue on and you are set to go.

Apply your favorite objects. Hot glue sea shells or buttons or decoupage stamps and love letters; whatever will bring a smile to your face is a great addition to your customized compact mirror.

Personalize a Compact Mirror with Rhinestones

Why powder your nose with a so-so compact when you can glam it up with rhinestones?Turn your compact into a fun fashion accessory with just a glue gun and a couple of faux baubles.

Wipe the surface of the compact clean to remove any dust. Plug in the glue gun.

Lay the compact on work surface and go through your stash of rhinestones. Begin arranging the stones on the compact to get a pleasing result. Don’t add glue yet.

Aim for a mixed but balanced look, sort of like a mosaic. For the compact in the picture, I used a mixture of oval and round rhinestones, avoiding the square-shaped ones because the corners were too sharp for such a small area.

When you have arranged your rhinestones the way you want them, carefully pick them up one at a time and place a tiny dab of hot glue on the back of each rhinestone, setting it into place firmly onto the compact’s surface. Use your thumb to press down on the rhinestone for about five seconds after you apply the glue, then pull very gently to test for adhesiveness. The rhinestone should be firmly in place before you begin adding another one.

Cover any spaces left in between the rhinestones with smaller jewels, using tiny dots of glue to secure them onto the bottom layer. Again, aim for a mixed effect. It’s okay to leave some space showing around the edge, but you want to have the center of the compact covered completely in “jewels.”After you’ve finished adding all the rhinestones, inspect the compact and remove any traces of dried glue, then buff gently with a paper towel and a little bit of Windex or plain vinegar to clean it up and make it sparkle.

Stereoscopic 3D News from CeBIT 2010 Currently Held in Germany

CeBIT is a tradeshow for the digital industry held each year in Hannover, Germany and you can consider it to be something like the European alternative of CES. CeBIT 2010 is currently being held (March 2nd – March 6th) and there are already some interesting S3D news and products being shown or announced during the expo. So here is in brief some information about the stereoscopic 3D-capable products that might get your attention and that will soon be available commercially, so that they can be bought…

Aiptek is showing probably one of the smallest and cheapest 3D camcorders that will soon be available on the market, it can record videos in stereoscopic 3D format at VGA (640×480) resolution and also take still pictures in S3D. The company also showed a 3D-capable autostereoscopic (no glasses needed) digital picture frame where you can display the 3D photos you’ve taken with the 3D camera. Both products should be available on the market in a few months with a recommended end user price of 199 Euro (roughly $270 USD). Here is a short video of both products in action at CeBIT.

ASUS unveiled a new supposedly 23-inch 3D-capable 120Hz LCD screen named Asus VG236H and also showed their upcoming 27-inch 3D-ready LCD monitor which we’ve already seen at CES – Asus PG276H. Both of them are offer Full HD resolution and support stereoscopic 3D active shutter glasses like Nvidia’s 3D Vision. Visitors can also see the first 3D Vision-ready gaming laptop – the Asus G51J 3D, but that is old news already as it is currently available on the market and you can buy it if you want to.

MSI is currently demonstrating a 24-inch All-In-One PC that uses a 120Hz Full HD panel with LED backlight to offer stereoscopic 3D support when used with active shutter glasses like for example Nvidia’s 3D Vision. But it seems that MSI has taken things even further by providing touch capabilities to the screen, so you’ll get both touch-capable and 3D-ready display with this computer. This seems to be a prototype though as MSI is not talking much about specs, not to mention that there is still not even an official product name for this 3D AIO PC mentioned anywhere. Another interesting thing that can be seen at CeBIT from MSI is their first supposedly 3D-capable gaming notebook – MSI GT660, although details about the stereo 3D support are still a bit vague. MSI seems to be focusing mostly on the audio provided by Dynaudio and the specs of the laptop than to clarify if it really has a 120Hz LCD panel and will support if it will support 3D Vision for example.

NVIDIA is yet again teasing us with working Fermi cards (GeForce GTX480) and with working setups utilizing the upcoming 3D Vision Surround technology which will allow you to play with up to 3 monitors or projectors in stereoscopic 3D mode.

DIY Wedding Flowers

There are a lot of ways to save money when you are planning a wedding, and doing the flowers yourself is one of them. It’s a fun project that you can do on your own, or friends can help you with (or do for you, perhaps, as a wedding gift, especially if they are crafty). If you aren’t particularly crafty, don’t worry – flower arranging requires some skill, but you don’t have to be Martha Stewart! You can check out a book on flower arranging from your library and pick up the basics pretty quickly, and the book should also give you plenty of ideas for what you want your arrangements to look like.

Once you’ve decided to do the flowers yourself, you’ll have to answer some questions before you can get started:

How much money am I willing to spend?
Do I want to use silk flowers? Real flowers? Or some combination, like real flowers for the wedding and silk flowers for the reception? (Time is a significant factor in this decision, since silk flower arrangements can be made weeks ahead of time, while real flowers must be arranged only a day or two prior and require refrigerated storage.)
For real flowers – do I want to get them from a friend’s garden? A local greenhouse? A flower shop?

Once you’ve considered and answered those questions, you can start some serious flower planning. If you are buying a lot of flowers (silk or real) don’t be afraid to ask for a bulk discount. At the very least, keep your eye out for local or online sales on silk florals, because craft stores, and placed like eBay, often offer periodic sales with significant discounts. If you want real flowers, and you’re feeling really thrifty and adventurous, you may want to cultivate a relationship with a local flower shop or florist and make arrangements to buy flowers at a steep discount that the shop would otherwise throw out. You and your bridal party may end up with some unique and stunning flowers in your bouquet that you would never have considered using otherwise! Have some fun with this. Planning a wedding doesn’t have to be stressful.

A digital photo frame (also called digital media frame) is a picture frame that displays digital photos without the need to print them or use a computer.

Features
Digital photo frames are common in 7 inch to 20 inch sizes. Some digital photo frames can only display JPEG pictures. Most digital photo frames display the photos as a slideshow and usually with an adjustable time interval. They may also be able send photos to a printer.
Other may support additional multimedia content, such as movie clips recorded in a digital camera’s movie mode, MPEG video files and/or MP3 audio. Many can display text files.
Certain frames can load pictures over the Internet from RSS feeds, photo sharing sites such as Flickr, Picasa and from e-mail. Such networked models usually support wireless (802.11) connections.
Digital photo frames typically display the pictures directly from a camera’s memory card, though certain frames also provide internal memory storage. Some allow users to upload pictures to the frame’s memory via a USB connection, wirelessly via bluetooth technology. Few are able to send photos with cellular connectivity. Some frames allow photos to be shared from a frame to another.
Most 7 inch (17.5cm) models show images at 430 x 234 pixels. With some models the width of each landscape image is stretched to achieve an aspect ratio of 16:9, which results in noticeable distortion. Built-in speakers are common for playing video content with sound, and many frames also feature remote controls.

Limitations
Because a digital photo frame’s display ratio doesn’t always match the original picture ratio, some pictures cannot be displayed in a satisfactory manner. For example they may be rendered too small, with black borders, or they may be automatically zoomed-in and randomly cropped. This issue can be resolved by using photo editing software to crop the pictures before transferring them to the digital frame.

Security Issues
In February 2008, a number of digital photo frames manufactured in China were found to be carrying a Trojan horse dubbed Mocmex on their internal data storage.
